Keith, I have the same headset/microphone as W2ENY and have very good results with my K3. I have used it both with the Kenwood adapter on the front panel as well as without it on the pack panel. I have made no modifications, er well maybe one described below. The microphone requires bias selected from the K3 menu.
My headset was purchased from US Interface. I believe it to be identical to W2ENY. http://usinterface.com/naviusa_012.htm It is quite comfortable to wear over a long period of time. The modification I made comes from the fact that the wire to the headset connects to the ear cup that has the attached microphone. When I turn my head the movement of the wire couples noise to the microphone. I re-routed the cable over the head to the other ear cup with small cable ties.
