Do you have a direct connection between your computer and the K3? Not through something like a microHAM controller, right?
I test this all the time. It's usually a cabling problem between the PC and the K3. Please use the K3 Utility's Port Tab "test communications" button or restart the K3 Utility (both cause the K3 Utility to try communications at all baud rates). The K3 in its "boot loader" state (which is indicated by the red Tx LED and "MCU LD" in the display (which may not be lit) will communicate at only 38,400 bps. The K3 Utility's Test Communications button should detect that the K3 is at this baud rate and show a "warning" (exclamation point) dialog box with that baud rate in it. It might help to beg or borrow a different RS-232 cable. These problems are frightening, but are most often due to a straightforward cabling problem.
