Bill (and all those contemplating using a non-Elecraft branded microphone with the K3),

The Heil headset can be plugged into the rear panel jacks - no adapter is used. Set the menu to use the rear mic connector.

The front panel wiring pinout is shown in the K3 manual on page 13. The Elecraft MH2, MD2, Proset K2 microphones are wired with this same pinout. Heil dynamic microphones will work using a Kenwood adapter because only the AF, PTT, AF return and PTT return lines are connected. Heil microphones with an electret element *may* work on the front panel jack if a Kenwood adapter is used. Kenwood non-amplified dynamic microphones will also work because they only use the same pins as above. You can easily check a Kenwood microphone by inspecting the wiring in the mic plug - if neither pin 5 nor 6 is connected in the mic plug, it will work. Yaesu and Icom (and others) microphone plug wiring is entirely different and will not work unless the mmicrophone plug is re-wired.

If you need assistance in de-ciphering the wiring on a non-Elecraft microphone, consult the information from the microphone manufacturer. Another good resource for microphone pinout information is the list provided by G4WPW that can be linked to from http://www.dxzone.com/dx15509/g4wpw-microphne-connections.html.

I have a set of Heil headphones. Although I don't work much phone I would
like to check and see if it works on phone. Does the K3 connector emulate
one of the other companies? (I have the adaptor for Yaesu, will that one
work?
