At the risk of being pedantic, the correct unit is the deciBel, one tenth of a Bel, and the correct abbreviation is dB (not Db). The Bel is a unit of change in loudness and is named after Alexander Graham Bell. Because the way humans hear is logarithmic (as is our perception of light), the Bel (and the deciBel) are the log of the ratio of sound levels, and are translated into the log of power levels and voltage levels corresponding to that loudness change.
