First of all, the crystal filter has nothing to do with trying different bandwidths. The DSP provides complete flexibility, including 1 kHz with the stock 2.7 kHz crystal roofing filter. But, yes, I've operated at a 1 kHz RX bandwidth on SSB, 400-1400 Hz. The intelligibility was much better than I expected, but I prefer 1.5 kHz (300-1800 Hz). If you actually use the KFL3A-1.0K crystal filter with a 1 kHz DSP bandwidth, the cascade will be less, maybe 900 Hz or so. As I recall, the KFL3A-1.0K is actually about 1.1 kHz at the -6 dB points, so it won't reduce a 1 kHz DSP bandwidth too much lower than about 900 Hz. For bandwidths that you use a lot, a crystal roofing filter slightly wider will provide maximum protection of the DSP from nearby strong signals. For example, if you operate SSB in heavy QRM a lot, e.g., contests, you might like a 1.6 kHz DSP bandwidth with the KFL3A-1.8K crystal filter. Ed - W0YK
