Lennar,

Vista and USB have nothing to do with each other. I did all my K3 firmware updates through a Microham Digi Keyer.

The problem with USB2SER hardware and software ports is that more applications have 'seen' the COM PORT and lock or poll them even if these applications are not running while using the port with the K3.

The hardware solution you have now is always the best. I bought an RS232 extension card myself in case of ever having a PC without COM ports.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 and Windows Vista - the solution!

Hi Gary et al,

As you might remember I did have some problems connecting my K3 to a new PC (HP) using Windows Vista 64-bit. The problem was connecdted to 64-bit which
still is fairly unusual.
Some good input from Gary, Elecraft and Simon (HB9DRV) turned my eyes away
from USB interfaces.
I just now installed a twin serial port (a PCI Express card), updated my K3
and is running Ham Radio deLux.
I would like to recommend this solution to anyone moving into (or up) to
Windows Vista 64.
Many thanks for valuable input,
