double check the fan wires that run between the fan casing and the back panel - it might not be possible to see those from the top and you would need to remove the fans from the back panel. But you might be able to tell by slowly rotating the fan manually, if it was a wire, you might be able to feel/hear it as the blade goes past. You would also be able to feel the bearings if they are that noisy.

I just took the top cover off the K3 and there are no wires catching the fan blades. The fan with the noisy bearings is the one on the right next to the antenna sockets. But both fans are noisier the faster they run and they drown out my computer fan.

I guess I need to ask Elecraft for replacement fans.
