As Don said, you just need to bend the case out a little to clear the keyer connector. You didn't mention it, but I assume you removed the tuning knob.
I had a similar failure to turn on a while ago and found that the switch wasn't working. I just sprayed it with contact cleaner and worked it a few times and it has been ok since.
