Hi, I just use the HI-CUT knob to crank down the bandwidth until the QRM disappears and this will automatically select the 1.8kHz if appropriate. I don't hear a dramatic improvement once the 1.8 kicks in so I don't know if it was worth the money. I never use the XFIL button for anything. I prefer to think of the radio as having (almost) continuously variable passband tuning and let the radio choose the correct filter.
