How about a couple of beeps when ptt is pressed if in a phone mode, and something, I'm not sure what for cw. Maybe a drastic change in sidetone frequency.
This solves the problem for a blind operator, and brings another sense into play for the sighted to say "HEY, PAY ATTENTION, SOMETHING IS'NT AS YOU EXPECT". I have noticed that many times engaging two senses makes the light dependent (hi hi) pay attention. Please take the humor as intended, its been a long day programming.
