The connector was put there in 2004.  Its primary purpose is factory 
programing of the MCU in the K3.  From the beginning of the K3 project, 
we've considered the possibility of attaching a small keyboard to that 
connector for RTTY/PSK/CW Tx operation.

Costs of a custom keyboard for the quantities we'd need are too high. 
Suitably small and rugged OEM keyboards that could easily be made 
compatible have proven very difficult to locate.

The then-common "PS/2" compatible keyboards have become scarcer. The 
ubiquitous interface is now USB.
