Basically the audio peaks are clipped, followed by a steep low pass filter that eliminates the harmonics. It's just a way to keep the talk power up.
Over here, unfortunately, we have adopted a 12.5KHz channeling which means that the maximum deviation you can use is about 4KHz. Some repeaters will cut you off if you use any more than that. So some way of boosting the average talk power is really necessary. Because of the low deviation I find FM a really hard mode to copy these days. The only people with decent audio are those with old rigs with the deviation still set up for 25KHz channeling. ----- Julian, G4ILO.
