I have a much easier time using HI CUT and LO CUT on SSB than attempting to use WIDTH and SHIFT. Every time the width is changed, the center frequency must be changed as well to maintain intelligibility. I use HI CUT to reduce the QRM coming in at a high audio frequency and then use LO CUT to reduce any low frequency trash. Careful on using LO CUT because intelligibility can be quickly lost, but using these controls I can reduce the bandwidth to less than 1.5 kHz and still maintain intelligibility. YMMV
