While your circumstances may have been different, for some time I have been using these non reversible battery clamps with pre-connected leads. These connectors will not fit the wrong way around on a leisure battery as the -ve and +ve posts are different sizes. See part number WD15R at www.maplin.co.uk for the type I use. These are also widely available from camping and leisure type stockists.
