I'm probably the only idiot that would do this but just in case, I thought I'd share what I just learned. I just completed building & configuring K3 #2965. It was a very fun project and I'm excited about actually using the radio but sad to see the kit portion done.
I operate a lot of RTTY so my first task was to make a cable to use FSK on the ACC connector. We have lots of VGA cables at work so I grabbed one of them and cut the connector off of one end. I plugged it in the ACC and tested pulling Pin 1 to ground.....worked fine. However when I went to turn off the rig with the POWER button the only thing that happened was that the display went blank. The rig was on and the display was lit however it was blank. I was forced to disconnect power to shut off the rig. Reconnecting power turned it on OK but the display was still blank. My mistake was in not checking the pinout for VGA cables. Pin 8 on the ACC connector is POWER ON and when that's pulled to ground the rig turns on (pretty neat!). However Pin 8 on the VGA cable is the return for Blue (RGB) and is connected to ground. So I was doing a POWER ON without realizing it. The rig can't be shut down with the POWER button while Pin 8 is pulled to ground. I'm not sure why the display went blank however. Once that VGA cable was removed the rig operated normally.....lesson learned. 73 de Terry KK6T K3 #2965 (alive & well) ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[email protected] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
