Good Evening,
The twenty meter net was not so bad considering I was running QRP throughout
the whole thing! I was trying two antennas out as I ran and getting
conflicting reports. Propagation is still magic! Right at the end I thought
about the FOBB I had run earlier in the day and realized I had not changed
power. It takes quite a few cranks to go from 5 watts to 100 watts. If you
could not hear me very well that may have been the problem. But from both FOBB
and ECN/20 I found twenty meters to be weaker than it has been lately. Thanks
go to Dale for the relay of Brett, KC7OTG. I had reports of someone trying to
check in but he is simply too close to me to work on 20 meters.
The forty meter net was filled with large amounts of QRM. Thunderheads over
the Sierras was one report but with warm, humid weather like we are
experiencing I would imagine there are quite a few pop up thunderstorms across
the country. My break to go listen to the wind after the second net was very
welcome. I was standing on a stump as the birds flew to within a foot of me
trying to figure out what I was doing. The ground squirrels ran across my feet
because they wanted to see what the birds were looking at. Very curious
critters!
I do not believe I will be splitting or cutting much wood for the next three
days. It will be just too warm. I know the fellers and skidders will not be
working because of the dry, hot conditions. Simply dragging one log against
another in this heat is enough to start a forest fire. They will enjoy
sleeping in until 4 AM; they are normally on the job by then and I cannot
imagine they could sleep much beyond that. Their work day ends around 1 PM and
they are in bed by 6 PM. Some of the crew is stuck on fire watch until dusk.

Hopefully I have listed the information error free. However it is hot and
sticky and Kevin is getting cranky. Maybe if I dump some ice water over my
head or better yet fill the tub with ice and sit in it. That should get me
thinking more clearly ;) If there are any errors please email me. Now to
survive the next four days and get back to normal weather.
Until next week stay well and stay cool,
       73,
Kevin. KD5ONS (Net Control Operator 5th Class)
