Oops... I was thinking "receive" and should point out that the K3 uses the
same I.F. system in both transmit and receive. So you must have the correct
I.F. (roofing) filter bandwidth installed for the mode you want to use:

2.7 kHz (or 2.8 kHz 5 pole) for SSB transmit. This works for CW transmit
too. 

6 KHz for AM transmit.

13 kHz for FM transmit. 

The K3 automatically selects the correct filter for transmit based on the
mode, regardless of which filter you're using in receive.

BTW, all of your assumptions in the first part of your message were correct.
