------------------------------- Been a long time since I've seen a house that didn't have its own ground rod at the outside panel. In any case, I use the mains ground because my soldering iron and the enclosures of power supplies and other bench equipment are all tied to it by their manufacturers through the 3-wire electrical plugs. I'd rather be sure everything on the bench is at the same potential, even if it's not an "earth ground" for some bizarre reason.
