Eric, It really is hard to say what the cause is - there are several possibilities.
It sounds like noise on the cable between the K2 and the computer - which is causing the data *to* the computer to be corrupted. Since the K2 changes frequency correctly, the path *from* the computer to the K2 is likely ok. Try a different serial port if possible or a different computer or if you are using one, a different USB to serial converter. If that does not help, check the negative voltage supply on the KIO2 option.
