Another couple of points Steve: Take a look at the recent ARRL reviews of transceivers, the "Spectral display of keying" graph shows the K3 to be 10 dB or more cleaner on CW transmit than most other transceivers. This is synthesiser and general noise as well as "key click" sidebands. These spurious outputs are mostly not mentioned but are a real problem if you have a ham within a couple of miles who runs more than a few Watts and are one of the reasons multi-radio stations look to the K3 as it's cleaner transmitter can allow CW and SSB stations to operate on the same band. I can hear a local station 50 KHz either side of his CW transmission, he's about 2 miles away.
Two tone 3rd order IMD figures for 12 Volt transceivers are mediocre and contribute to wide transmissions on SSB. The K3 is no better in this regard than other brands. The IMD figures on the K3 improve by around 10 dB when running at quarter power, useful if you have a linear that gives a decent output with a 25 Watt input. With the K3 receiver you have one of the best receivers around, but unfortunately the transmitters in your area can often be the problem. Make sure your menu item "AGC PLS" is set to "nor" otherwise pulses from light switches and similar transients can cause the K3's AGC to punch holes in the received signal. 73 Dave, G4AON K3/100 #80 ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[email protected] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
