I've had excellent results from the little Radio Shack electret mike
cartridges too. They are spec'd flat from  about 50 Hz to 16KHz, so any
audio "shaping" happens external to the mike, usually in the rig. That's the
right place to do it.

And they only set you back a couple of dollars -
