I had the same problem using a Dell XP Pro desktop computer and a Belkin USB/Serial adapter which worked fine with everything else, including the K3. I then tried a Win2K laptop with a real serial port and it worked. Finally, I hooked the Belkin adapter to the laptop and it worked there too!
I checked the port speed, etc. I'm afraid I don't know what to suggest except 'try a different computer'.
