I have been using scanning for the first time today. (Looking for some life on 10 meters). I prefer to have the audio on which requires holding the scan button a bit longer. I noticed that sometimes the scanning starts immediately and a few KHz fly by before the audio comes on. Other times scanning does not begin until AF ON is displayed. I think for consistency scanning should begin when the scan button is released.
