I wouldn't bother with a mono adapter. If I read the KIO3 schematic correctly, the K3's back-panel microphone connector and Line In connector are stereo jacks with only the tip wired.
I think the damage you refer to might have been from a mono speaker plug that shorts one side of the speaker amplifier to ground.
