Good choice. That's exactly what I did almost three years ago. It won't take you long to get the hang of soldering. There are some great tutorials on the Elecraft site as well as other places on the internet. The most important thing is to have good tools, including a mat and a good soldering station. I found that there isn't a lot of skill involved in soldering and most of it is just common sense and having a steady hand. I figured if I had bought all of the smaller kits just to practice soldering, I wouldn't have had enough to buy the K2! ;-)
You'll do fine and operating the K2 is a blast.
