Another solution to the mic interface problem is the MFJ 1251 Universal
Microphone Adapter. You configure internal jumpers for the specific mic and
radio you're using. You'll have to reconfigure the device for each different
type or style of mic (Yaesu 8 pin round or modular, ICOM 8 pin round or
modular, etc.), but
it will solve the problem. The K3 mic connector is configured in the Kenwood
mode, so you'd follow the directions for Yaesu mic to Kenwood radio. It should
work well. The cost of the device is about $35.
I originally bought one of these things because I wanted to use it to plug
two mics into a Yaesu FT-857D that I use as a backup HF and VHF/UHF radio in
the shack. I quickly found that I really couldn't run the two mics
simultaneously with it, but by combining a couple of Heil adapters with the
unit, I can now run both the modular hand mic and a Heil dual element desk mic
with footswitch through it, one at a time. This is better on the 857D than
reconnecting each time at the radio's connector, since that requires removal of
the control head -- a stupid design decision by Yaesu. Anyway, if you're just
trying to adapt Yaesu mics to the K3, you might consider the MFJ adapter. It
should work just fine.
