A function generator generates various audio-frequency waveforms. Usually sine, square, triangle, ramp and sometimes other "functions" as well.
It is useful for testing all kinds of audio circuits. For example, you can test a phone transmitter by feeding a sine wave into the mic input. Some function generators go up high enough in frequency to test IF circuits as well.
