You don't need it at all, but it is nice. I am tuned on 40 right now, and just brought up the callsign screen on CW Skimmer. I have a list of 30 callsigns that are in CW QSOs right now. It would take a while to do that by tuning up and down. and waiting for each "xxxx de xxxx". I have been doing it without a computer for 35 years or so, and will continue doing it that way at times, but there is nothing wrong with using tools that are available, and CW Skimmer is a great tool. As for expense, I got an LP-Pan off of EBay for $135, and it goes to a PC and Soundcard I already had.
