I use a Heil footswitch connected as you described. Using connectors on the back of the K3 sure cuts down on cable clutter. I use a breakout box to go from the mic plug that normally plugs into the front of the K3 into the separate "PTT in" and "mic" lines. The Line from the footswitch plugs into a pigtail that is built into the Heil mic cable.
