Garry: There sure has been a lot of posts about USB/serial problems.
I use a laptop with USB only and the dreaded Vista (works fine for me). I bought a cheapo USB to serial cable, loaded in the driver and that is all I did -- the computer did the rest. It recognizes the K3 (even when I occasionally use a hub) automatically. I have done about 8 regular and beta upgrades and they have all gone flawlessly. Obviously, others have not been so lucky. What I would suggest is your pal get a USB/serial cable, load in a driver and then do the test in the K3 utility. There may be no problem at all. If they talk to each other, great; if not troubleshoot from that point.
