There is another point worth mentioning...if you are using a computer that has no COM ports but with a USB-2.0 --> COM adapter, you should be aware of the fact that many of the so-called adapters (the cheaper ones) do not implement the entire RS-232 protocol. I mentioned this on this reflector a few days ago...and it is a well-known problem (google USB to RS-232 adapters).
