Are you sure you have the correct spacing? I.e. the 2 spacers stacked on top of each other (flatwise) should fit perfectly under each end of the diffuser and everywhere underneath it.
The instructions for my LCD were completely spot-on. The leads for the LCD should just barely go into the holes as-is or even almost float above them (this is why you solder them from the component side of the board and not the bottom).
