I believe that TSA requires laptops, digital movie cameras, and "other large electronics items" to be removed from their carrying cases and placed in a separate bin to go through xray. practices vary a little from airport to airport, but it certainly does not hurt to at least inform TSA what's in your hand luggage and ask them if it should be removed.
No matter what, you can count on having the bag and radio take aside to be wiped down and tested for explosives. that has happened to me every time I have carried any ham radio through security, even a little 2-meter mobile unit. if you check the radio, inform TSA what's in the bag when you hand it over to them.
