I assume (though the referenced test procedure doesn't say it), that with pins 2 and 3 shorted to each other, each character you type on hyperterminal should be echoed on-screen twice, once locally and once by the loopback. If that's the case. then it may be that I just have a bad *computer* port, which would be good news indeed.
