Because it was probably caused by a passing electrical storm. The RS-232 port was working before the storm and not after. Several people reported similar experiences, so I accepted the likelihood, even though I have run a pair of other radios for over 15 years without ever disconnecting the RS-232 cable (everything between house and tower *was* disconnected).
