Great news for those who support the adoption of proportional representation

in Quebec. During the Liberal Party of Quebec's congress in Trois Rivieres

this weekend, the proposition to adopt proportional representation in

principle was adopted. This means that both the ADQ and the PLQ have PR as

part of their official party platform. According to the latest polls, both

parties have the combined support of 60% - 65% of the population.

Unfortunately, given the vagaries of FPTP, the PQ could still win the

upcoming election with only 35%-40% of the popular vote and simply ignore

the possibility of implementing PR. Nevertheless, this recent development

represents a huge step forward in the struggle to democratize our political

institutions.
