Jurij et al, At the very least, the putative use of Approval under Communism is instructive for at least our USA primary elections.
Even in a one-party state with a boss-picked cadre of allowed candidates, a boss may be enlightened enough to perceive the benefits of increased popular support, from the general public or anyhow from within the party ranks. Such support is promoted by letting the public (or anyhow general party membership) use Approval Voting to elect (or select) the most popular and accepted of the allowed candidates. There is a clear lesson here for the USA analogy: primary elections, wherein each party chooses candidates who must be party members (registrants). A primary may be 'closed' (only party registrants can vote to choose the party's candidates) or 'open'. Either way, Approval Voting allows selection of the allowed electorate's most popular choices, thereby helping to build the party's support in the ensuing general election.
