Dear Alex, Mathematicians have studied something called two person zero-sum games. What one player wins the other player loses. For some such games the best way to play is to use a randomization device. What is intriguing, and I think my memory is right here, is that in experiments where people have been taught the advantage of using the randomization approach, if allowed to play for a while, the "students" learn to use randomization in a way that approaches the optimal value the theory offers.
