I consider using mplayer2 cheating. These designs always inspired me: spiceofdesign1<http://spiceofdesign.deviantart.com/art/Audrey-A-Movie-Application-212868680> spiceofdesign2<http://spiceofdesign.deviantart.com/art/Audience-Ambiance-Style-313147013> danrabbit <http://danrabbit.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d4s6cj1>
However, I would not suggest using Clutter/transparency because it impacts performance severely (especially on older machines). I know Xubuntu are and I would bet Lubuntu might be looking for a player to use as default in their distributions. You should consider creating a launchpad page and accepting some bugs. And set up a PPA (I can help with that).
