Update: gnome-icon-theme can be worked around rather cleanly, at least its non-wtf part.

But often they don't, like in bug #795191 which takes a lot of time and paperwork to fix (and nobody knows if my fix will be accepted), but it might be useful to other derivatives at least. And there are also packages like gnome-icon-theme that are obviously needed but have ridiculous dependencies and are not likely to be fixed. And we have to deal with this somehow if we want to get a clean system that doesn't install Unity with every update.
