Error messages on login page unhelpful

Bug description:
If a user attempts to login without entering any login details an
error bar is shown which contains 2 identical error messages: "field
is required.".
Also, if the user enters a username but no password, then the same
error message as above is shown, along with another error: "Sorry,
unrecognised username or password.", however if the user enters a
password, but no username then only the "unrecognised username or
password" message is shown.
This is inconsistant, confusing and unhelpful.
I suggest that the error messages are changed so that the following error
messages (or similar) are shown instead, and never more than a single error is
shown:
"A username and password are required to login."
"A password is required to login."
"A username is required to login."
"Sorry, the username and password combination provided was not recognised."
