Looking forward to this feature coming. To avoid overloading the server, you'll could try implementing a subscription service to each message/answers. That way, if a user doesn't want to be notified about a certain message, they could always turn it off or have it send the notification daily/weekly/monthly.

Status in Official elementary website development: Confirmed Bug description: If someone answers my question, I should get an email. Otherwise how will I know? If someone PMs me and I've not visited the site lately, how do I know to read it? If someone relies to a comment I made on a Journal entry, how do I know to read it and possibly respond? Right now, a lot of actions on the site are one-stop ordeals. Providing email alerts would draw people back to the site, greatly increasing user interaction (and ad revenue!).
