Title:
AMD64 and i386 is confusing for new users
Status in elementary Website:
Fix Released
Bug description:
Today on IRC there was someone who asked this: "<elementary-site7> Total Newb
Question: On the website it says that the 64-bit edition is for AMD 64. Does
this mean that it ONLY work with AMD or will it work with others too--ie.
Intel?"
This indeed seems to cause a lot of confusion for new users. I remember when
I downloaded my first Linux distro... I was presented with a download page
where I had choice between i386, AMD64 and PPC... I was like "What the heck are
they talking about? Just give me the ISO!". Because there wasn't any
explanation what it meant, I chose the AMD64 version, only to curse Linux
because of course the CD didn't boot on my 32-bit system.
It might be good to just remove the i386 and AMD64 in brackets, as for new
users it only causes confusion, and more experienced users don't need it. Also
it might be a good idea to add something like "If you're not sure, it's best to
download the 32-bit version.", as the 32-bit version will also run on 64-bit
systems, but not the other way around.
