not entirely correct.
Intel added UEFI aka. efi-2.x support to gnu-efi which was the first
step needed to support x86_64. elilo depends on gnu-efi. so once x86_64
support was added to gnu-efi then elilo could support x86_64. gnu-efi
(and therefore elilo) still supports ia32 and ia64 with efi 1.x and 2.x
but only x86_64 with efi 2.x because there was no x86_64 efi platform
before the 2.x spec.
Apple probably decided to use efi 1.x because the 2.x spec wasnt fully
baked when the new intel Macs were in development.
On another note It actually makes no business sense for them to support
linux on Macs when the OS they ship is already based on BSD and Apple
would probably argue is better. Basically elilo was born for running
Linux and HPUX on ia64, that is why it exists but fear not. grub2 is in
the works and will support efi, though I wouldnt be surprised if they
start with the UEFI spec, one usually starts with the latest specs
available. This situation might be different if Apple had always used
intel processors...
