Add many buttons is not the right way, even with a small number of
buttons on the remote control.
up/down/left/right/select/menu, you can do a lot of things, Hold menu
could show a popup with more actions for example. ALl other actions can
be done with normal pressure on remote buttons. No need to add ACTION
buttons on UI.

In this case hold left/right or up/down could show big letter over the
list, and left/right or up/down change the letter. When select is
pressed the list scroll to the right location. And if the user have a
big Vista Media Center remote control ;) he could use keypad.
Today my UI don't propose more actions than play, but when I thought
about my UI, I only think with 6 buttons too :) I think that non geek
users hate buttons. But I'm maybe wrong.
