I would certainly like learn Python and take a look at this - time permitting. As for having a unified look and feel - yeah, once mplayer is launched as an external app, it will look and behave like mplayer but this is a sacrifice I am willing to make for smooth 1080p playback. Besides, once gstreamer has full VDPAU support, launching mplayer to play these files will be deprecated anyway.
