It happened with a few monospaced fonts. Later or tomorrow I can be
more detailed. I also saw in Kermit's utf-8.txt that the characters
in the first column where spacing differently, and this means that
some space was put after the glyph (it can be due to font
substitutions that the glyph has a different box, but there is extra
white space, too). Later more. The fonts I tried where urw++ NimbusL,
Java's Lucida Sans Typewriter, Mac OS X's Courier Std, PS3's/MS web
core fonts' Courier New.

The key produces non-spacing accents ´ or ` with shift. ~ is Alt-n
(non-spacing) and works fine. To get a tilde I need to press Alt-n
and SPACE. If the second character is different, tilde and this
character can combine: õ ñ ã ...
