Apologies.  No idea why this compiled on my machine.  I've updated  
the source tarball with this patch.

I'm not sure why it would be slow, and Gnome shouldn't affect it.   
Are you using the Art back end and running locally?  This provides  
decent performance on a 600 MHz-ish laptop, using Startup-0.16.  Xlib  
also worked _OK_ for me in the past, but any attempt to run remotely  
brings poor performance and flashing as you mention.
