Dear Adrian, Here's a simpler case. I start Emacs.app, then in terminal I enter the first line and get the next two lines in response.
> emacsclient temp Waiting for Emacs... -error Unknown&_command:&_/Users/gilbertharman/temp If instead I start Carbon emacs, the same command in terminal opens a window in emacs for the file temp. The reference to pico in the error message in my previous message occurs because alpine's name for the file to be edited has "pico" in it. I hope this is useful.
