Here's a second version of the patch that addresses first part of (B), simplifies the code a little more, and fixes a problem where stray unerased character glitches could be drawn in certain scrolling and text-editing situations. It also corrects naming for the "hbar" cursor ("underscore" under the previous code).
I'll commit this tomorrow if I don't hear anything bad.
